Glad to be apart

Mixing “Burn the Ships” and “Bryan Easter” in the middle of Guthrie’s Alley. A great afternoon of truth in a vein of darkness. Glad to be apart…

The A-Team

In Film on June 17, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Ok, so I fell for it… I saw this Rotten Tomatoes Review of the A-Team on Hulu. Then I went and saw it and had a blast! I only realized later that I had fallen for a Social Media/Internet advertising campaign. This is one of the first, (I’m sure there’s been more before) online reviews of a current film. I use Hulu alot and it definitely caught my eye. I’d imagine we’ll be seeing more of this in the near future. Anyways, onto the review!

I really thought this was going to be just a waste of a good 100 million dollar budget. But boy was I wrong! Attitude, RIGHT out the gate! I was won over with Hannibal’s intro, less is always more. I also enjoyed the fact that they rebooted the series. It’s definitely an origin story, but they just moved the time line from the 60’s to 2010. I bought it.

This is a summer action movie, if there’s ever been one. It’s popcorn, but it is a lot of fun to live with these characters for 120 minutes. If there was anything negative to say, I dropped out a couple of times when BA tried to be more Gangster than Mr. T. Also, I didn’t have a huge issue with action editing pacing, but it was the standard action I’m editing so fast so it seems so intense that you can’t help but feel my cuts, kind of edit. On a side note, I look forward to when it’s trendy to edit action as wider, longer cuts. So we can actually see the scope of whats happening and I think were getting pretty close to that trend.

So yeah, the characters are a bit 2D, but hey… this is the A-Team. All these guys do is blown stuff up! But, in the writer’s defense, there is some character development, mostly with BA and Face. Also, The A-Team is actually pretty clean except for couple MF’ers that happen in every PG-13 film these days. It’s also strangely absent of any sex scene, which was surprisingly refreshing. Cause we all know, the Face is the MAN! We don’t need to see that junk! (No pun intended)

So, in summary, there’s always a plan, the A-Team always wins to fight another day and the bad guys go. BOOM.

Go see it.

California Update

In and Everything, Apple, Audio, Comics, Film, Food, Funny, God, Life, PC Gaming, Prayer, Random, RC, Tech, The Universe on June 16, 2010 at 5:39 am

I’ve been meaning to post an update about whats been going on as of late. For those of you that don’t know, I’ve recently moved to California for two reasons. To pursue work in the Film Industry to be “Salt and Light” to the film crews out in the trenches. The other reason, was to come out to Simi Valley and get plugged into Cornerstone Church.

God has really been blessing me tremendously and has given me alot of early confirmations and successes. I could write a novel about these last two months, but I’d think it’d be more fun if I list off (in no particular order) what all God has done with my life in my first two months in California. (Some of these are pretty ridiculous)

Got my first film gig via CraigsList in under 5 minutes

Watch God save (dude was dead!) and transform a homeless man with no prospects

Arrived at Cornerstone Church right as Francis Chan announced God was calling him away

I know people at Panavision and Warner Bros now (crazy!)

Got promoted from Production Assistant, to Grip & Electric, to Head Editor on my first California film.

God provided an amazing apartment in Bakersfield

Set up my first C-Stand and Flag

Seen giving a bottle of water and a prayer to a homeless person, can actually change their life

Seen over 100+ people baptisted at Hingepoint & Cornerstone combined.

Francis Chan crossed his arms and squinted at me

Working as an Assistant Camera Operator on a RED Feature film in Bakersfield in July

Successfully navigated LA traffic

Got to thank the guy (Jeff Henson) that makes the Cornerstone Podcasts

Watched God grow His church in Bakersfield!

Edited with one of the camera guys from Boston Legal

Watch God provide over $10,000 dollars to Single Moms in Bakersfield through Hingepoint Church

Slept in my truck on set

Survived a 2500 mile journey by myself

Recorded a soundtrack to a short film

Crashed and temporarily lost my Kombat 40 in alfalfa field

I got to edited Chan Sermons and shoot footage for a Cornerstone video

God provided a new apartment in Simi Valley, which I’ll be moving into in August

And at the end of it all, I’m watching God humble me and break me.

Proving that He really does know what He’s doing…

Thank you Jesus

Resisting Lust…

In God, Life, Prayer on June 16, 2010 at 5:00 am

I’m sure that blog title will get some second looks!

I just wanted to quickly share some thoughts the Holy Spirit put on my mind the other day about resisting lust. Russ Chambers at HingePoint Church in Bakersfield CA, (http://www.hingepoint.cc) was preaching on Lust last Sunday. He talked about how we lust after things other than just sexual desire and how we really need to stay in reality. The Holy Spirit pointed out some areas in my life, that I lust after sometimes even more than sex! Unbelievable i know. But I wanted to share some practical applications that came to light that really blew my mind!

From what limited understanding I have of neurology and that being backwater at best. The part of our brain that we activate when we lust after sexual fantasies is also the same part of the brain we daydream with. So I’ve been trying to basically starve that part of my brain, or maybe a better way to put it, bring that part of my brain into balance or reality. Cause, I daydream ALOT throughout the day and many of these thoughts are rather, well… pretty gratifying to say the least.  Alot of these thoughts are about success, making more money, making new contacts, new projects, conversations I want to have with people, basically anything and everything about me looking GOOD.

So, I’ve been trying to reign in these day dreams throughout the day. When my mind would start drifting off about some situation that wasn’t based in reality. I’ve been trying to make a conscience effort to stop thinking about it. And, as I’ve been doing this, when it comes time to wind down at the end of the day, my mind doesn’t wander to the realm of sexual stuff as it did before. Its been a real blessing, because that would be the point when I’d get in trouble. And now, I’m able to resist like I never had before.

So anyways, I hope this encourages someone out there that’s been struggling with lust as I have been. It’s still a battle, but its a battle to be won everyday. When you don’t keep your mind in reality, it gives your flesh freedom to wander wherever it wishes. It’s something to think about. I hope it helps. =]
